Routine Builder

A simple visual routine-building guide for ages 2-9 that helps kids follow morning or bedtime steps independently.

A visual routine takes the daily “what’s next?” negotiation out of your hands and puts it on the wall, where your child can check it themselves. This simple builder helps you create a morning or bedtime routine your child can follow independently.

Quick Facts

  • Best for: Ages 2–9
  • Setup time: 15 minutes, one time
  • Skill focus: Independence, sequencing, routine memory

How to Build One

  1. List every step of the routine in order (e.g. morning: wake up, use the bathroom, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, shoes on).
  2. Keep it to 5–7 steps maximum — more than that becomes overwhelming to track.
  3. For younger kids, draw or print a simple picture for each step instead of just words.
  4. Post it at your child’s eye level, somewhere they pass every day (a bedroom door, the bathroom mirror).
  5. Let your child check off or flip each step themselves as they complete it.

What It’s Building

A posted routine shifts the responsibility for remembering “what’s next” from parent to child, which reduces the number of times you have to give the same instruction every day — and builds a real independence skill in the process.

Parent Tip

Resist adding steps once the routine is posted — a routine that keeps growing stops feeling achievable. Add a new step only after the current one is solid for at least two weeks.
